Duty of care and clinical governance - what's the difference?

What is ‘duty of care’, and its relationship with clinical governance?

As with regulation, duty of care sets a minimum standard, whereas clinical governance goes above and beyond. Clinical governance elevates the standard from a foundation of safety, to one of safety and quality. In any care environment, understanding your duty of care will inform what is required in clinical governance as a minimum. In non-clinical scenarios, this understanding will inform the extent to which a clinical governance framework is required at all.
